Forward March
As winter prepares to hand over the baton to spring, you might be wondering if it’s too late for that New Year’s resolution to exercise more. The answer is no. In fact, with the year still in its infancy and a new season on the horizon, March is the perfect time to put one foot in front of the other and start walking. So close out this shortest month with a commitment to make some huge strides in the next.
Apparel. On wet days, try waterproof shoes and socks or gaiters (garments that protect your lower legs and feet from the elements), or just secure shower caps around your shoes with rubber bands. Wear gloves, plus a hat or polar buff (a versatile head garment that functions as a thermal scarf or cap) for warmth. Consider a microfleece vest to insulate without adding bulk to your attire. Select comfortable walking shoes with adequate padding and support. Attach reflective stripping to your clothing for optimum safety in dark or low-light conditions.
Accountability. Sometimes the best way to begin something new is to ask someone to join you. Partner with a friend or family member for regular walking dates. You can even join a walking club to gain automatic support, schedules, and training guides.
